5 Things to Ask Yourself before Buying a New Planner

It’s planner season, my dear journalers! It is exciting to get in the hands of a new planner as the new year comes! But wait, with so many planners out in the market, we tend to get overwhelmed which one you would like best. Tell you what, this may help you, here are the 5 things to ask yourself before buying a new planner.

1. Do I love to write on physical paper?

Things to Ask Yourself before Buying a New Planner

Ask yourself this before buying a new planner. Do you love writing on paper? Is it satisfying for you? I knew I love to write because that’s what I have been trained to do growing up and I fell in love with it. I owned a diary when I was about 9 years old. Really, it matters if you love to write in a notebook.

2.  What size of planner do I want?

There are various sizes of planners in the market. Small, lengthwise, A6 and more. What size do you think you need? Are you going to carry it around with your work/school bag? Is it for traveling so you need something light and small? Do you want a big space to write on so you don’t mind having a big one? How about the planner cover? How do you want it to be? Leather? Paperback, hardbound? Even the weight matters, too!

3. What will I use it for?

Those are the things to ask yourself before buying a new planner. Are you going to use it as a daily planner wherein you will jot down your tasks? Is the planner for your doodles, sketches or drawings? What medium are you going to use the planner for? Ballpen? Colored pens? Watercolor? Perhaps, do you also consider bullet journaling? Those matters because you have to choose a planner that contains blank pages, lined, bulleted, or it is already pre-designed with words, dated, even with journal prompts!

4. What is my budget?

Live within your means. Don’t overspend if you can’t afford it. There are planners out there that entice you to keep drinking coffee (lol) just to get a piece of binded paper. Is it really worth it? Maybe you can do away with it? Set a budget. I believe that is one thing to ask yourself before buying a new planner.

5. Can it help me in many ways?

Ask yourself, “do I think having a planner would help me in my life?” Deep? Well, yes indeed. When you spend on something, it is either you leave it to go to waste or use it to its advantage. Do you think it could help you organize your daily tasks? How about your thoughts? Your imagination? Can it help you as a creative outlet? For me, it does and it helps me with healing and recognizing my feelings. That’s how journaling works, if it helps you to be better, use it. .

Pro tip:

Not so much of a pro but, hey, maybe I am just underestimating myself, but I have been journaling my whole life and in 2017, that’s the time I dived into it deeply, especially bullet journaling.  So, here goes…

Last advise? If journaling isn’t new to you, maybe you explore other ways of journaling. Perhaps you need a separate planner for each purpose. Say for example; financial planner, daily planner to break down your tasks, a lengthwise travel journal to document your journey, and more! So many things to try!

If you are new to journaling, then try just for one function first. Are you going to use it for school or work to keep track of your tasks? Get a dated daily planner. Let’s see how it would open you to the world of journaling!  So, those are the  things to ask yourself before buying a new planner.  If you would like to start, here’s a video for you:

Hope this helps! Stay radiant!
